This is what I have to say about learning the pipes:
Practice daily;
Practice exercises as well as tunes,....slowly;
Listen for crossing noises and fix them;
Listen and learn from your instructors;
Kep your fingers that are off the holes close to the chanter;
Always, always keep the fingers light on the chanter.

Re: Advice from pipers please . . . .
To use the biblical vernacular. "Whatever your hand finds to to, Do it with all your might.."
Dive in the water is fine. Crossing noises and flubbed grace notes are all part of the game. What really matters is having fun and learning something. I have been piping for 27 years and I just have fun with it. Join a band if your so inclined. It's a lot like wearing the kilt. It's an oddity to see but after the silly comments most are impressed you did it.

Thanks, Bill, nice website, and good looking band, seriously old too! Best of luck. Going to open another thread, Surely at least SOME of the chaps offering you advice here are actually in a band?
Keep it up, it's great!

Actually it's the Brown Haired Maiden next.
But I'm off for a few weeks, so I'll just have to keep Wha Hae-ing.

Padre Bill - I can identify with a lot of what you are saying, deffinate commit to learning the pipes.
I offer this wee bit of advice. Often times it will be time and money for the lessons wil be factors. Online is the Bagpipe Player software program (free is good ) and many different sites with free music downloaads that the soft ware can read. I use this method for learning new tunes, you can set tempo as you learn. There are exercises also available.
Check out the You Tube for bagpipe lessons, here you can see how all the embelishments are done with close ups of the fingerings.
With these bits, if you only a few minutes a day you can concentrate on on techniques or tunes.
I am in between teachers now due my schedule, I try to have at least 30 minutes a day, 15 on an embelishment and 15 on a tune that has that embelishment in it.
Goodd luck
Dave
