    Finished Brooch!
Scotland is only 1/5 the size of Montana, but Scotland has over 3,000 castles and Montana has none.

Very nicely done. I was in Estes Park about 4 years ago while visiting friends that live in Loveland. Gorgeous town would be a great place to visit a Highland Games. In fact, I just polished off a nice cool beverage in my glass from the Estes Park Brewery.

That is gorgeous! How did you bring accentuate the design? Did you stain it with something or perhaps singe it?

My first reaction was, "a pie like Grandma used to make!" She had hardwood pie-jaggers, tools for making fancy pie crusts. She would press the jagger into the top crust before laying it on the pie, then brush the design with a little cream so it would bake up looking burnished, like this.

Thank you. I flamed it with a torch. The BBQ lighter wasn't nearly as hot as it needed to be.

Question If you don't mind my asking...

That is just beautiful. You've really stimulated my curiosity.

Let me see if I understand your methods correctly:
    1. Create the design in Photoshop.
    2. Transfer design to the elk bud,
    3. Carve out the design with a Dremel tool,
    4. Burnish the edges with a butane torch,
    5. Fill the voids with something (what?),
    6. Polish on a buffing wheel.

If I'm asking trade secrets, please ignore.

Jack, you're right about everything except #5. The voids are still there. Somehow the heat from the torch catches the edges and leaves the bottom of the carving unblemished.
    Glad you like it,
    Ron
