storage?

okay so while looking over my small but growing collection of kilt attire, i am now noticing that i am unsure of the best way to store and keep all my stuff. know i know that kilts are most often hung, which mine are, but mostly im asking the where/whats/and wheres of your kilt accessories.

how does one store your Sporrans, hose, Sgian Dubhs, belts, bonnets and such forth? currently i just have a box of these things in my closet to keep them somewhat free of cat hair, but i just wondering what one does when the collection grows. do you have a special drawer in your dresser for such things? hang as much as you can? special kilt outfit organizers?

As far as the tartan kilt, I have all of the jackets, sporrans, hose, and so on and so on, in a moth-proof garment-hanger bag that goes on the hanger rod of the closet with a hook at each end and a wire frame on the inside-top etc. It's about a foot and a half wide and deep, and about four or so feet tall. It zips down the front center, and is made of some kind of very fine mesh. I think I got them at Walmart. Some of the accessories are hanging and others, like hose, are placed at the bottom of the bag.

As far as my canvas kilt, it is folded into thirds, inside a pillow case, and in a drawer. I keep my nice shoes in their boxes with shoe trees. My kilt pin is in the wool kilt which is hanging in the garment bag.

As the collection grows, so does the need for space. If you can afford modern fitted wardrobes then wire baskets incorporated are a good way of keeping sporrans and other highland items together. Failing that, more drawer space

I would caution against keeping a kilt pin attached to the kilt. It is too easy for the pin to catch and tear the fabric when taking the kilt out of the wardrobe. And, whilst pewter pins do not usually tarnish, brass, silver and gold does so if the pin is made of one of those metals you could end up with tarnish marks on the kilt itself

My 3 kilts are hung in the closet with cedar rings attached to the hangers. My jacket and waistcoat are in the suit bag that Rocky shipped them to me in. My 2 sporrans, belt, sgain, 4 pair of hose, gaters and flashes are all in a drawer my dresser that I have cleaned out of old t-shirts that I no longer wore. I have no brouges, but wear the same dress shoes I wear with a suit, so they are in the closet with my other shoes. My balmoral gets worn nearly every day, so it is usually sitting on my desk.

My kilts hang in zippered pillow covers (thanks to the XMARKER who posted that idea) with a bag of cedar balls, and my jackets are in garment bags. I keep my hose in a soft basket on back of the top shelf of my armoire. I also have a large box once used to ship an order of shirts where I keep sporrans, belts, etc.

I will add another question to this thread: This summer, I bought a sporran faced with the summer-coat fur of an arctic fox (my wife was rather insistent, and I do like to keep her happy). At the moment, it is wrapped in tissue paper and inside a zip-lock plastic bag with a handful of cedar balls. How do other members store fur sporrans?

guess it depends on how much stuff you have, but rather than trying to find homes in my already minimal clothing storage space for all the sporrans, kilt hose and flashes, big belts, kilt pins and blades etc... I got a set of these storage deals on sale from Target;

As to the storage of fur sporrans, storing leather and fur stuff in plastic bags is usually not recommended, something breathable is better. They sell cloth "purse bags" for this, but an old cotton pillowcase will do the trick.

One warning about storing leather next to plastic.

There sometimes occur odd interactions between the oils in the two materials, and you can see discolouration on the plastics and drying in the leathers.

If you store leather in these plastic tote/storage systems, you'd be wise to place some fabric between the sporrans and the plastic itself. Again, old pillowcases would work.

LLast year for our anniversary, and while I happened to be out of the country playing kilted golf in Scotland, my loving wife (not kilt-loving, but loving all the same) turned the closet of our least used guest bedroom into a special cedar lined storage space dedicated to my kilts, plus other woolens in the off-season. 6 months after moving into the space with my kilts and kit I discovered moths in the closet in significant numbers so I researched treatment and prevention and storage options and went whole hog on preservation and organization. My kilts and jackets/waistcoats are all in breathable hanging bags, sporrans and bonnets in various sized plastic containers, and hose in a couple drawers, with everything heavily invested with cedar strip liners, cedar balls, etc... I need to get a few more of the bags and containers due to some recent acquisitions.

But I can honestly say I have not seen a single moth since my infestation and eradication project nearly 6 months ago, and the closet organization does make things a bit easier to store and find when needed.

What a great thread. Most of my accessories are just piles into the clo set in a way that keeps them out of my wife's way...

I've been thinking if a new dresser to have drawers for my growing collection of accessories.

Is there anything wrong with storing kilts flat in a drawer instead of hanging?
