Awesome job! So simple to do and it looks like a million bucks!
I would highly recommend using petersham ribbon to bind the brim instead of the polyester grosgrain. Petersham is a very flexible type of grosgrain ribbon which will give you a smoother edge. Check out this link for a resource: https://www.farthingales.on.ca/products.php?cat=belting

Re: DIY Bonnet and Cockade start to finish.
That is a good conversion, but I suspect that the ribbon isn't going to stand up to the wear on the edge of the band
Decorative trimmings can look old very quickly - it does give you the opportunity to practise your techniques, but it can result in wear on the edge you are sewing onto.
I was thinking about using fleece for the edging strip. It does tend to pill, but it can be brushed back to a velvet nap with patience and a suede brush.

It wasn't wide enough, either! Ha. Too be honest, I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to materials. I just wandered around Michaels for an hour and thats the best I could come up with. I will say, however, overall cost was about 10 dollars. And you are right, definitely a practice project. I might roll without the ribbon completely if and when it decides to fall off haha.

Re: DIY Bonnet and Cockade start to finish.
It looks good! I have thought about using a satin ribbon for the cockade to make a more formal bonnet and after seeing this I might just make one.

The stuff I used wased pretty cheap, and I am terrible at putting it together. But, I do agree, with your talent a nice satin ribbon would look great.

Re: DIY Bonnet and Cockade start to finish.
I think that the ribbon will be OK, at least for some time, as the cockade, but under the pressures put on it, I suspect that the band will get a bit tatty rather quickly.
If I am ever looking for an enterprise to occupy my time I could try using my fine gauge knitting machine to make bonnet edging strips. There is a market for hose toppers.....
