Of Buses, Planes and Trains
I'm not sure if this is the right spot for this. I have used the search feature and been unable to find the answer. My question is this: besides our own Welsh Cilt wearer, Derek, who else wears their kilt on pulic transportation like buses, planes and trains on a regular basis?
The reason I'm asking is because I'm going to a whiskey tasting in San Francisco on Friday evening and I plan on going kilted. As I've recently wrecked my car, I have to rely on public transportation to get anywhere. What have been your experiences while traveling on public transportation?
I'm going to try to rent a car for that evening but failing that, I'm stuck taking public transportation.
Thanks.

Re: Of Buses, Planes and Trains
I have used the Sky Train, the Ferries and Buses in Vancouver and never had a bad experience while wearing my kilt. I say go for it.

EPITAPH: Decades from now, no one will know what my bank balance looked like, it won't matter to anyone what kind of car I drove, nor will anyone care what sort of house I lived in. But the world will be a different place, because I did something so mind bafflingly eccentric that my ruins have become a tourist attraction.

Re: Of Buses, Planes and Trains
I have worn the the kilt on trains, buses, trams, planes, taxis, never had a bad experience. Just the same as wearing a kilt anywhere else. If you have worn a kilt in public, then using public transport is no different.

I walk all over town (Boston) but I also take the subway often. I've never had any bad experiences. And a few times, have gotten compliments. Occasionally someone will just kind of look at me blankly, but most often people keep to themselves - it is Boston after all!

Tired, beardless, soaking wet, and riding MARTA.

I took MARTA to downtown Atlanta through half of my undergrad and all of my Master's, kilted at least a couple times a week. Never had a problem, but I got lots of comps.
You'll be fine.

Re: Of Buses, Planes and Trains
I always fly kilted, mainly because, as we all know, it's far more comfortable. I've also taken trains, both the tube and longer commuter trains in and around London and never had a bad experience. A few compliments here and there. Mistaken for a Scot once, which sometimes happens, but is easily set right. Likewise here in Canada, though I've never taken trains kilted; I usually either walk or cycle.
Personally, I'd rather have the several layers of fabric between me and the seat that a kilt offers, rather than just the one that trousers have!
I'm sure you'll have no troubles in SF.

Dittoes.... planes, trains, automobile the Maglev train in Shanghai, Star Ferry in Hong Kong, tube in London etc. The comments on planes are very true although I try to wear one of my casual kilts for long haul flights.

Re: Of Buses, Planes and Trains
Thank you, gentlemen for your responses. I'm sure I'll have a good time being the only kilted one on the buses, BART and at the Johnny Walker tasting on Friday. Even though there will be photos of the event posted on the Johnny Walker facebook page, I will take my camera so I can get some pictures because we all know the rules. NO PICTURES IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!

Re: Of Buses, Planes and Trains
Lancer ,,, since you mentioned my name. Travelling on public transport in a cilt/kilt is absolutely no different to travelling in trousers or jeans. We are going to Glastonbury again this sat and I will be on a bus, then train, then another bus to get there and then reverse to come home.
