    Re: Appalachian American

Welcome from the highlands of Central Massachusetts. I lived in the highlands of Southern West Virginia for a year. Every day I was amazed at the beauty. I did not hear bagpipes at all while there but it started me on my journey with the 5-string banjo.

    Re: Appalachian American

Hi, Jubal, and welcome to X Marks from the bottom end of Africa.
The Cape Folded Mountain System lacks a single name (like Appalachians) but it also was a barrier to inward migration and is the backbone of the part of South Africa first settled by people of European origin.
I now live at its eastern end, but was born at the western extremity (Cape Town) and also lived on a farm at its northern limit.
They are beautiful mountains (although drier than the Appalachians) and well worth having a look at.
    Regards,
    Mike

    Re: Appalachian American

    Greetings from a fellow Appalachian!!

I'm from Central West Virginia, in the heart of Appalachia, now living in California.

It's interesting how we often identify ourselves as being Appalachian, rather than as being from such-and-such State. We do have our own sort of accent and way of life which sets us apart.

I was out piping at a church here in California and I was struck by the familiar tones of the Pastor's voice. After the service I asked him where he was from and he said "Appalachia". Turns out he's also from West Virginia!

Here's pretty much how we talk there in Appalachia

compared to how we talk here in California

Thing is, both these ways of talking sound perfectly normal to me. All my relatives back in West Virginia sound like the first video, and my family here in California sound like the second.
