I hardly feel the seam at all. We kept about 3/4 of an inch fabric from the stitch and folded this "extra fabric" on each side, thus making quite a wide seam; hardly noticeable.

Yes ! I encourage you to do so .

You need 1 yard of fabric (double width).

Experiment with cheap fabric untill you get the perfect pattern, though.
