If you were wanting to put together a modern, formal, black tie outfit how would you roll it?
Mine:
-a 3 pleat Lady Chrystel modern kilt in Ancient Dunbar tartan
...
-western tooled sporran

However, they still are solidly in the "Scottish" tradition: tartan kilt, sporran and so on.. I figured that this post was about contemporary kilts like Utilikilts, Freedom Kilts dress models in solid colors, Amerikilts and so on, perhaps made in more "formal" colors and fabrics.
That's just my take on what this forum is all about. <snip>
In the first post, Rondo mentioned a kilt in the Dunbar tartan and a Western tooled sporran, so I figured tartan was ok. I included a solid colour kilt and black on grey just in case. Did you notice that, after all the debate a while back, the forum descriptions have been revised?
As for the more modern kilts you mentioned Alan H, here's some pics of people wearing Utilikilts at weddings:

Yeah...I'm cool with tartan. I selected Dunbar Ancient because, ironically, the ancient tartans are a relatively modern creation. And the Western thing is a function of where I live. I'm okay with all the ideas presented. I like being able to see what others think might be cool for a more modern formal occasion. Most of our THCD friends are probably going into cardiac arrest about now. For the record I am cool with THCD as well.

Good point, the OP did mention tartan.
Either way, no worries! IN fact, truth be told, I think that the tartan-based, vest and ruche tie combinations, like what you posted look miles better than the edgy "forget tradition" formal kilt things I've seen. That's just my taste. Whether I would in fact wear the combination of things that I just described in my posts in this thread...hmmm... I dunno. I, personally am more comfortable in a more traditionally based formalwear concept.
However, I'm also solidly behind the idea that when it comes to weddings, man-oh-man...that's YOUR day, and everybody should do what they ruddy well want. It's not every day that you get to do whatever you please, and be the center of attention and it's OK, so I figure.... GO for it.
