I have also enjoyed the same Lillian Beckwith stories, and you mentioning them reminded me of Finlay J. MacDonald's Crowdie and Cream, Crotal and White and Corncrake and Lysander. Later these were dramatised for BBC TV in Gaelic about 2002.
I don't think I have read any Finlay J MacDonald, but I will check them out now..thanks!

It's been a number of years since I read these, but I really enjoyed the trilogy by Lewis Grassic Gibbons -- The Scots Quair. The three novels are Sunset Song, Cloud Howe and Gray Granite.

You can't truly be over vampire books unless you've given Saberhagen a try. His group of books on the topic have a decidedly different spin on the genre. Starting with An Old Friend of the Family. Dracula wants to set the record straight and tell his side of the story and disputes all of the lies "that nut Van Helsing has been saying about him."
I'll also add another vote for the Outlander saga. Wife talked me into reading the first one; we now own hardbacks of the entire set. One of which is signed by the author.

Re: Favourite Scottish (themed) Novels
For light reading, I have to choose M. C. Beaton's Hamish MacBeth stories. Not great literature, but I have found the characters fun and the stories interesting enough.
Along the more classical lines, I would choose Rob Roy. The story is not about Rob Royf--he's actually a minor charaqcter--but it's still a good read if you can discipline yourself to reading language that is more stilted and colorful than what we are used to.
The Bruce Trilogy was not to bad either, but I've seen much better writers.

Now I was just about to post that... I used to live in that neck of the woods...
I should suggest it to KiltedDixon too... He has Dunnotar as his profile pic...

Re: Favourite Scottish (themed) Novels
Before Diana Gabaldon there was Barbara Erskine. She's written quite a few historical/present novels, several of which are set in or about Scotland.
Lady of Hay, 1986
*Kingdom of Shadows, 1988
*Child of the Phoenix, 1992
Midnight is a Lonely Place, 1994
House of Echoes, 1996
On the Edge of Darkness, 1998
Whispers in the Sand, 2000
Hiding from the Light, 2002
Daughters of Fire, 2006
The Warrior's Princess, 2008
Time's Legacy, 2010
The * titles are the books that I remember feature Scotland.
