The non-tartan contemporary kilt thread

Alan, I wish I did. I like modern non-tartan kilts as much as any other garment I own, and I wish I had more than one.

But I will at least contribute a photo of me wearing my UK while on holidays in the Philippines this summer. The tropical weather was great, and the convenience of wearing a kilt was awesome! On the day this pic was taken we had to change in/out of our swimsuits at least 3 times during the course of our island tour, and a kilt with button snaps made it a breeze!

I was also pleasantly surprised that none of the locals really even seemed to bat an eyelid in regards to my choice of clothing... It's almost as if they grew up with people wearing kilts around them (even though this particular island is NOT known for any sort of unbifurcated mens' wear such as sarongs)...

Not working on one Bugbear but here is mine from Techdragon and Alt kilts, box pleats, sewn edges

I think there is a lot of room to experiment with different materials, as has been aptly demonstrated by paulhenry. Google images turned up this one from Celtic Warrior Kilts, which would be great for Halloween:

And the more I see Howie Nicholsby's work, the more I like it. Very often it seems that contemporary or modern kilts are synonymous with the most informal style but 21st Century Kilts are also seen worn at more of a smart casual level. I have to say though, that I far prefer them worn with a sporran.

Alan H, please forgive the gentleman on the left for his tartan... I was going to crop him out but it was too much hassle.

That red and black 'spider" kilt was made some years ago by someone who was on this forum. I remember what he looked like, I don't remember his handle, though.

Ted, do you actually have a kilt yet? I thought you threw them all out, because A.) you didn't feel that kilts were part of your tradition and B.) a person needed to be a "manly man" to wear a kilt, and you felt that you were not such a person.

have you changed your mind and made/purchased a kilt again? I know finances are tight for you, how about just downloading the X Kilt manual and making an X-kilt....which is a box pleat with sewn-down edges. It's quite easy to do.

And please...no excuses this time, OK? If you don't have a kilt and money is tight, then bloody well MAKE ONE.

I think the guy on the far left looks great. I bet he's there because he's an Asian guy....proving that you don't HAVE TO BE white-Scottish to wear a kilt. The guy in the middle looks great, though I've never been keen on the "kilt suit" thing. I'd lose the boots and replace them with more traditional hose and shoes, but whatever. The guy second from right looks great...leather kilt, flat cap. Burly guy. I dig it.

The kilt with the ginormous pockets sorta doesn't do it for me. You have to give Howie credit for trying new stuff, whatever the case.
