Argyle Hose for daywear...

I tend to agree but less for reasons of tradition and more from the point of view that if I wear my best all the time there's nothing left to look extra special on those extra special occasions when I want to look extra dressy. Hope that makes sense

I tend to agree with David, there is a right tool for the right job, and I too like to reserve a bit of bling factor for the more important events. Doesn't mean I wouldn't wear diced or argyll hose during the daytime, but if I did they would be with fairly dressy attire like that in Matt's photo.

Thanks to all for the input. David, I definitely see you point about saving the special accouterments for the special occasions. I don't plan on wearing the argyle hose as frequently as my others, so by default they will be worn "specially." I have them on right now actually (first time is always special:-) and I'm at work. Shirt, tie, waistcoat, tweed jacket and brogues - so, dressed up, but not formal. And Matt, I agree, I would not wear these hose in a casual way. You look sharp BTW! I think I look pretty good too - I will post pics as soon as I can.

There are quite a few black and white pictures that show argyle hose worn with daywear.

There are more than a few bit of photographic evidence to prove this point.

However, I see no strict rule that says you cannot also wear them for day wear. I think they would look a bit out of place with uber casual attire, such as a tshirt. But for smart day wear, they can add a touch of class and color.

I couldn't agree with you more Matt.

Matt definitely wears these type of hose very well for daywear, but I am somewhat of a staunch traditionalist and restrict the wearing of my Argyll style hose, as well as diced hose, for evening/formal attire. Basically, anytime I am wearing a coatee or doublet of some sort, for black or white tie affairs.

I have read a lot of your posts since you became a member, and you always appear to dress very sharp; there is no doubt that you are a traditionalist, as much as anyone who calls themselves such. However, I will agree to disagree on your opinion that the restricting of argyll hose to Evening wear is the only position open to a traditionalist.

For me, I'd reserve Argyle hose for formal wear, day or evening. Partly because they are usually more expensive than regular, solid colour hose and partly because they are visually louder.

I find that the issue of price has tended to keep this striking dress accessory locked in the drawer until Evening only events.

Those really look sharp! I never quite understood the restriction; solid hose look nice, but diced and Argyll hose can really make a less formal outfit pop.

That's my feeling, as well. Personally, I have no problems with wearing them for casual wear- tartan hose were originally worn for any and all occasions anyway- but the problem is that they're so darned expensive that I can't justify wearing them all the time. I have a pair of hand-knit hose made for me by a friend, and I consider those to be every bit as nice as any pair of argyles. I wore them to the mall tonight when I took my daughter shoe shopping. I do that from time to time. I just feel like wearing them. And why not? Every so often it's nice to just wear something classy for the heck of it.

Honestly, the kilt is already "loud" enough in a usual business attire. What we consider formal hose isn't going to make it any louder than it already is.

Also, looks great with that jacket.

I like the looks! I have to agree with Matt that for smart daywear, Argyll hose can look great. However, I also agree with the other comments about wanting to save some of one's finer accessories for special events...

The hose look really nice! Just one suggestion (which applies for any who wear Argyle hose).

Try turning the cuffs down slightly more. Not only will it show more knee, but it will also improve the look of the pattern on the hose. These are knit so that the pattern on the cuff will match up with the pattern on the sock.

If you look at the above photo, at the front of your legs, the bottom point of the blue diamond should meet up with the top point of the green diamond below it, with none of the blank charcoal colored area showing. This way it gives the appearance of all looking of one piece.

No worries, though, it's just one of the subtle things you learn when you are initiated into the Argyle hose owner's club. :-)
