Ah, another Bates man! I have a trilby and several tweed caps from Bates. Love their shop on Jermyn Street.

Re: Lost a Thread????? Here tis...
Cowher,
I believe you have a good point- if you are doing some kind of shooting / hunting that doesn't require you to crawl through things or to walk around a lot in the heat, then a nice tweed suit ought to work nicely. I believe the hose worn with Plus Fours/breeks/ knickers closely resemble the ones worn with a kilt. Assuming your knees are not in danger, I believe you could remove the knee length trousers and put on a kilt. I think Matthew Newsome has a kilt length shooting jacket.
On a related topic, I believe it is usual for gentlemen in the UK to wear a necktie while shooting. Not so long ago, you would see men in hunting photos in the US wearing one, too. Again, it depends on the game. I have worn a bow tie while shooting (at) bobwhites.

A fairly typical bunch of British shooters out and about partridge shooting in early autumn, you will note a tie around each neck and is the accepted norm. Indeed shooting hose and kilt hose are one and the same thing for me.

You know, of course, that they are gone from their dusty shop at 21a Jermyn Street-- turfed out, along with Binks, the stuffed cat, by the Crown Estate Agents who are redeveloping Jermyn Street, bringing it into the modern age... why, I ask myself. *sigh*
I think they closed their doors in February of last year... bringing the country just step closer to becoming Quaint Britain.
