    Kilt pin damage

A while back there was some mention of the damage repeated removal and replacement of a kilt pin does to the fabric. I was thinking that adding a small piece of fusable interfacing on the underside at that location might well minimize the damage. Fusable interfacing is nonwoven so it doesn't stretch and would give the fabric a great deal of support. Being fused to the fabric with a hot iron it would prevent the threads from fraying and raveling.

    Not bad advice at all.

I have a pin I thought I might wear with my Utilikilt, but haven't yet because I don't want to punch a couple holes (however small) in the fabric.

Chance, to help the appearance you couls cover the interface with a patch of fabric that matches the kilt. You can get heat bonding tape at fabric stores so there wouldn't be any stitching required.

    Kilt-pin damage

As I have only just joined this site, please forgive me if I have missed something on this topic, but I do not understand how repeated removal and replacement of a kilt pin occurs. The purpose of a kilt-pin is simply to give some weight to the outer-apron and most definitely not to attach the outer-apron to the inner. Consequently, once inserted in the outer-apron, the pin does not ever have to be removed except in the unlikely event of cleaning of the kilt. If the two aprons are attached, the kilt will not "hang" properly as the wearer moves.

Welcome to the forum kiltedscot glad you could join us.

I recall the earlier discussion about kilt pins, it was mentioned that the best thing is to leave the pin in the kilt as you suggest, even if it means a seperate pin for each kilt owned.

    cleaning?

    Hi KiltedScot,
Welcome to the forum, you were saying in the unlikely event of the kilt being cleaned. Why would this be unlikely, I understood from several reputable sources (ie one or two kilt makers) that kilts should be cleaned regularly as you would with for example a suit.
Unless of course the kilt makers own the dry cleaners too
    Cheers Rhino

Also there are a lot of people on this forum who own more than one kilt and the discussion was saying that you should have a kilt pin for each kilt and not use one kilt pin on various kilts...

I only have one pin at this time which is why the subject stuck in my mind and I set out to find an easy way to eliminate the problem. I did put the patch of interfacing on each of my 3 kilts and I'll let y'all know how it works. So far so good. Since it's fused to the fabric and it's nonwoven material I expect it to do the job pretty well.

I'm in the same boat. So far I only have one pin that I would use as a kilt pin. I have two Utilikilts that I trade back and forth depending on my mood. This would lead to the removal/replacement factor.

So, unless someone can find me another Queensryche pin from their Live-Crime tour circa 1990, I am stuck with just the one pin.

I have to wear uniform shirts with a name badge at work. The shirts have two areas that look like button holes without the holes. One could do the same setup on a kilt once the exact location is approved by the Kilt Pin Police.
