Scottevest Outback Jacket in lieu of sporran

If you hike much you know a sporran can be irritating and limit what you can carry.

I just sprung for a Scottevest Outback jacket. While its intended to beat the extra baggage fees when flying (20 pockets) it also serves as a great alternative to a sporran when hiking. What I like most about it is what they call a weight management system. It hangs well and feels good even when loaded with camera and water bottles. Yup, even has a pocket large enough for my big camera so it doesn't have to hang from my neck and bounce off my belly when hiking.

The jacket is a bit long for kilt fashion, but that's not an issue out on the trail...and its a good thing in foul weather. I'm most pleased.

While it may not be exactly according to standards, I think it looks good with the kilt (nice tartan!).

Thanks, that's my Macdonald Lord of the Isles from Lochcarron, hand sewn by Kathy Lare...my first "tank" if an 11 ounce kilt can be called a tank - that's the only weight the mill had the fabric in back then.

That jacket reminds me of my old journalism professor from the '70s. He could develop a roll of film in any bathroom in the world with what he carried in his many-pocketed vest. He taught his students to do it, too! Oh, I hope digital cameras die!

    Crack me up!

Was just surfing last night and found the Billingham photo vests from England...looks like they could replace a large camera bag. Expensive for sure - but with solid value that comes with craftsmanship.

They make them short so photographers can sit and crouch without conflict between all the stuffed pockets on the vest - but that "short" makes them a good prospect for wear with kilts.

That's very close to his vest, Ron!

He carried all the chemicals, can opener, film roller, dark plastic and tape to cover any crack of light in doors and windows, a battery-powered red light (he made us do it in complete darkness, though, in case the batteries failed! ) and then used the toilet, sink and tub/shower to develop. String and clothes pins to dry. Courier to closest embassy or AP office. Very, very old school! I loved it!
