That repair is not only sensible, but a reversal to the original method to hold this sort of buckle. The wire thingy is circa 1950. I concur, file & emery paper over the cut edge of the pin, then add a 'small dab'' of super glue to hold it in place.

I did file it once I got home from holiday but it never had any sign of coming out so does not need anything at the bottom of the nail to hold it and as long as you put the belt on the same way round each time it is not a problem. It also sits better with the plate buckle.
