Re: Out in the Nova Scotia woods

I am really liking what your doing there and the leg wrappings are genius. The whole image is one of comfort and making best use of the materials to hand, which I am sure is what many a highlander actually did. Your artistic and creative mind is at work here and for me it is a pleasure seeing someone who enjoys wearing the kilt really creating a style of their own and I applaud you for it. Well done mate.

    Thank you very much...

I do feel like I want to have a philosophy of dress that uses available fabric that I can affordably find (I am a "starving artist" - well maybe not that but "difficulty paying rent and bills artist" for sure - after all and a $200 kilt broke the bank and $30 kilt hose are just too much). So in a way, I feel like I am like some poor peasant who needs to be resourceful and use what fabric works... but just leg wrappings seem more archaic to me and I like it.

I might make a cape out of some fabric from the fabric store or just use some length of wide tartan maybe I can find.

I don't feel like I want to wear any type of modern jacket but use more lengths of fabric material (larger and wider than a typical scarf) and see if I can survive a winter like that.

Today I did find myself tucking a loose end of my (rather narrow) neck scarf into my belt so it went across my body adding a bit of a layer of defense against the winter storm ... if I had wider fabric, it would add a lot of warmth against such weather.

Watch some of the sites that sell tartan by the yard. Sometimes they have pieces on sale cheap in their clearance section.

    Like the look.

I totally like the look and the expedient use of available fabrics. For some sort of cloakish wrap, I think you want something like a shepherd's plaid, also known as a day or laird's plaid:

    http://giftshop.scottishtartans.org/...rds_plaid.html

It doesn't need to be in the same sett/colors as your kilt, don't worry about matching them.

You may also notice I said "something like" a shepherd's plaid. I understand your financial situation, and tartan fabric from Scotland is not known for being cheap, though Meadcrafter makes an excellent suggestion about looking for sales on tartan yardage.
    look at
And you needn't restrict yourself to "proper" tartan from Scotland, as you can find plenty of other wool "tartanish" or tweed fabrics elsewhere for less. For example, pages and pages of 'em in heavyweight/coating fabric here:

    http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/se...s=wool+coating

(Prices shown are in US dollars.)

Those are 61" width, which is actually double the width you'd need. You might also look through bolts of cloth at a fabric store near you and see if there's something you like that you can have them just cut to the length you want and walk right out of the store with it.
