Re: Trews!
I'm admittedly a new-comer to Scottish traditions and attire, but I'll offer my opinion anyways. The pictures posted above don't really fit into my mental image of "Trews" based on my understanding from former threads on the subject.
Both Matt's and Glen's look to be more what I would describe as tartan trousers given the lower waist, belt, and rather wide legs. Sandy...your father's are a bit trimmer through the leg and look a bit better to my eye. I'll admit that I might be misinformed, but my understanding is that trews are higher waisted, have narrow legs, and a higher fishtail back. Perhaps my definition is overly narrow.
That being said, if I were ever to wear a pair of trews, I'd want them to fit more like the fine looking military officers seen in this photo which I harvested from the Royal Caledonian Ball website:
I mean no offense to any of you gentlemen that have posted here...so please don't take any. As I said, just offering my thoughts...and another picture for the masses.

Re: Trews!
Gentlemen need to be rather trim of figure, otherwise they run the risk of looking like a tartan egg cup!

Re: Trews!
"Trews" is a word that admittedly means different things to different people. In the strictest sense of the word, trews are military-cut fishtail trousers, as Longhunter describes. This is not what I have.
What I have could easily be described as tartan trousers, though many use the term "trews" generically to describe any form of tartan trousers, including the fishtail variety.
Though I will also say that mine are not made to sit low on the waist, but rather higher up on my natural waist (though not quite as high as my kilt). I had them made that way specifically so I could wear a kilt jacket with them and not have to worry about the jacket looking "too short."
McMurdo's do seem to be made to sit lower on the waist.

Re: Trews!
Matt
Mine do sit higher than regular trousers, as you say not quite as high as a kilt. I think the problem with the photo is that it was taken at the end of the day they normally sit higher than pictured.
