Re: An alternative to "gentlemen"
These words have always made sense to me, "esse quam videri", to be rather than to seem.

Kilted Lebowski's LOL!!!
Do we have to hate the Eagles too?
I'm totally wearing bowling shoes with my kilt(s), in honor of!
And P.S.
I have met Mr. Alan in person and he was definitely a gentleman...not in a Jane Austen-of-no-profession kind of way. I'd want him on my side of the foxhole, so to speak.
He's good people!

Anyone care to enlighten this kilted Luddite?
Sushi, The Dude is a stoner who doesn't have a job and doesn't want one. He lives in his bathrobe and has no goals except to bowl, drink at the bar at the bowling alley and to light up another joint. He is the ultimate slacker.
Yep, XMarks really needs people like The Dude.
He is the son I've always wanted!??!

GGGP just likes me 'cause I helped her with her caber toss.

I promise, however, that there was no tweed, nor any tonic, nor anything custom-tailored, nor even a pith helmet involved. Her virtue (and mine) is (are) intact.
Mostly.

Sushi, this might help a little. Most revolves around the movie, but kind of sums up The Dude. http://dudeism.com/duderonomy/

...dissing the tonic.
I'm disagreeing with you on the G&T's.

That's about right. He's one of the main characters in a rather surreal 1998 movie called "The Big Lebowski". The BIG Lebowski is a millionaire whose wife is kidnapped. The Dude, also happens to have the last name of "Lebwowski" is the slacker who sort of tries to get her back. It's a very odd movie. The Dude has become something like an anti-hero to people who enjoy the movie.
It's also not a movie to be taken deadly seriously.

We had one, once, rather like the dude. Seriously.
He is the son I've always wanted!??!
OK, NOW you're pulling my leg!

From Finding Nemo. He's cool.
"Don't hurl on the shell dude, I just waxed it"....best line of the whole movie.
