I promise, however, that there was no tweed, nor any tonic, nor anything custom-tailored, nor even a pith helmet involved. Her virtue (and mine) is (are) intact.

    Mostly.
The pith helmet sounds like a reference to Panache

    C. S. Lewis: "gentlemen"

I'm looking at the C. S. Lewis paragraph right now. It's on pages xiii and xiii in my HarperCollins Ebook copy (1952, 1980). It begins, "The word gentleman originally meant something recognisable;" and ends, "It has been spoiled for that purpose."
    So, for what it's worth...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Not particularly.... pith helmets seem to have spread pretty widely throughout the Rabble. At least 3-4 guys wear them to Games, now and then, here in NorCal.

Besides, if I had an issue with Panache, I'd just tell him.

    You're welcome to speculate, though.

I heartily agree, and I can't imagine why anyone else would. The alternative would be a . . . boor?

    It annoys me no end.

That's fine. It annoys me no end, but fine.

Who ever could you be talking about Alan...... ???????

I think that I should prefer to be a gentleman over a "Dude"

Luckily for me it would seem that that there are still Mrs Peels in this world that are still quite attracted their John Steeds

But it is a big and grand world of ours and I think there is room enough in it for both Dudes and Gentlemen, and that is fine.

However my friend, I would like you to remember to....

    BEHAVE!!!!

Not particularly about you, despite the references, but more so about a whole group of attitudes.

Behave? Nah! Besides, you don't smoke a pipe, you're just chewing on that thing!
