Re: An alternative to "gentlemen"
Speaking as the most boring member of the forum, I look up to Grant as an inspiration.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Re: An alternative to "gentlemen"
To the OP
I think you must be just a little bit old school and if you are I can say I follow you in that track. Personally I feel that "gentleman" is more a goal than a self-given title. In my experience those who refer to themselves as gentlemen usually aren't. I do smoke a pipe on occasion, don't own a spot of tweed, I honestly didn't even know what that hat was called, and I feel gin should be used to clean wounds and start fires but you know how the bit goes with opinions hehe. I'm no gentleman but I aim to be whenever I can. I know where you’re coming from though I believe. I have to admit I loved the Big Lebowski, I had to run out and make my first white Russian after that. And that carpet really did tie that room together!
May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live

Blackadder: So, Baldrick, when I call for my incredibly strong ale, I want you to pass me water. Understand?
Baldrick: Yes, m'lord. When you ask for ale, I pass water.

I wish I had Jamie!
It's just the episode regarding Dr Johnson's Dictionary in Blackadder The Third when they think the dictionary has been burned and Baldric defined a Dog as "not a Cat,"
So he would have defined a Gentleman as "not a Lady."

Re: An alternative to "gentlemen"
Alan - while I can sense your frustration, I don't believe we can disassociate ourselves from the term "gentlemen". From the forum rules:
Our guiding principles will always be;
“We agree to conduct ourselves as the Ladies and Gentlemen of X Marks.” This site has always been a place where our members treat each other in a polite and respectful, open and honest manner at all times.
On that basis we are all either ladies or gentlemen (depending on gender) regardless of what we wear or how we act.

Pity. I had hopes that you might have had a plan as cunning as a fox that used to be Professor of Cunning at Oxford University but has moved on and is now working for the U.N. at the High Commission of International Cunning Planning.
Probably beyond Grant anyway...

And no doubt the Fox is studying data on vulpinical raids on rubber chicken houses.

Re: An alternative to "gentlemen"
In one of those coincidences which seem to happen too frequently to be unplanned 'The Big Lebowski' was shown on UK TV recently, and I noticed just in time to start recording five seconds before it started.
Having now watched it I see the attraction, though I am sure I missed a lot.
