Kilt and necktie in matching tartan?
I have a number of tartan neckties that I wear with my tweed jackets and suits, and a few of these are a perfect match to the several tartan kilts I own.
But whenever I have tried wearing a kilt and necktie in matching tartan, I just don't like the look. Seems too "matchy-matchy." What does the rabble think?

I have a tie made on the bias - as I think is common for tartan ties. I have worn it with the same tartan kilt when wearing a waistcoat. I would not wear it without one. I think the small amount of the same tartan above the waistcoat is nice.

It is a look that I am not fond of. Also, one needs to be aware that the mixing of different clan tartans (different tartans from the SAME clan is OK, if you must)is not encouraged.

I save tartan neckties for when I am not wearing the kilt. Although one is free to wear one's clothes any way one likes, I encourage others not to wear tartan neckties and kilts together.

I agree with tulloch, matching tartan ties work for me when there is something between the kilt and the tie that gives a visual break between the two.
My general rule of thumb is, no more than one matching tartan item with your kilt. So matching tartan flashes are fine, or a matching tartan tie is fine, or a matching tartan flatcap is fine (somewhere in the Highlands of Scotland Jock Scot keels over) but more than one of them and you begin (in my opinion) to look like "TARTAN MAN"

I agree with Tulloch and Jamie. I think a Tartan tie with a waistcoat works well when worn with the kilt. Also agree that more than one matching tartan item is overkill. As far as a MATCHING tie is concerned, I don't think that it necessarily has to be so. I sometimes wear a MacFarlane tie (Locharon, ancient colors) with my MacDonald Isles Hunting kilt (muted colors) and I think it looks quite nice - again, to note, with a vest.

Only certain ties with certain matching kilts, and always with the tie separated/covered in large part by a nice solid waistcoat. And I honestly do NOT do it very frequently with the ties.
I also adhere to the concept Jamie espouses of never wearing more than one matching tartan accessory with the kilt at any one time---same distribution, flashes, tie, flatcap (sorry Jock, I'll cover the cost of the nitroglycerin for your chest pain), or plaid.

Re: Kilt and necktie in matching tartan?
I think Jamie looks very smart. There is a sort of tradition that nothing tartan should be worn above the waist when kilted but, like all such rules, it is there to be broken. Where exactly it originated I do not know but, looking at genuine costumes such as these from the National Museum of Scotland refutes any historical basis for such beliefs -
