    Necktie advice

I hope this is the right forum for this question. My Aikido Dojo is celebrating its 40th anniversary this coming weekend. Somewhat of a dress occsion. I ad planned to wear my Black Watch kilt with black shirt and hose, but have had a devil of a time finding a necktie to go along- not finding anything locally that was suitable, I purchased a Hunter Green tie online, but I am not happy with the color coordination, any advice would be helpful.
    Thank you,
    Todd Mitchell

You could go for a navy tie if you can find one that is a match to the Blue in the tartan. I would wear the kilt out to the shop so that you can find a true match to either the Green or the Blue. Personally I always wear a solid colour wool tie with my kilts.

You can allways go with a Black Watch Tartan tie. How much tie is going to show? If your wearing a jacket without the waist coat, then I'd go with a solid color tie to pull it off the black shirt. With jacket and waist coat, then I wear the Blackwatch tie. So little shows, it is just a matter of co-ordination.

I plan to forgo the waistcoat (too much black) and was thus thinking solid color, too. I'm sure I would not be in the jacket very long once the dancing starts sooo- all thetie will show.

Gee...it has often been said that you can wear any shirt that you would wear with a pair of trousers. I would think that that applies to a tie as well.

I wore this outfit to my daughter's wedding...note the tie colour. I don't claim any particular sartorial distinction but I don't think it looks bad. Now, if a coral coloured tie/cravat can look good with a Black Watch kilt, I reckon nearly any colour can.

Best thing to do is ask a woman (sister, wife, etc). They'll be honest. My girlfriend (after some hysterical laughter) is often the most honest and accurate judge of fashion.

I usually go to a Good Will or second hand store and sort through their ties for a non-shiney tie. I would think if you goe easy on the stripes all will be well.

Well, Ham would shiver at matching a tartan tie to the kilt tartan...but I do it too...

And, a side note DWFII...what wood is your cane/stick??? I have an identical one handed down to me from my grandfather...always wondered what the wood is.

And, back on topic...use the mirror...you'll know when its right. Even if its a tad "unusual" like maybe a bright red tie of celebration...

With a black shirt I'd try to key off of the green or blue of the tartan - a solid color will be a bit more subdued than tartan tartan everywhere but what the heck. It depends on what impression you want to leave.
