    I have to ask...what part is it, where the white "slot" mark is on the animal?
    or is that added for fun?

    It's a spiny (until ground down a wee bit) dorsal ridge.

    Google image search for Short-tailed Stingray. While alive the "eye" isn't readily apparent. It is a group of large denticles beneath the skin which store Calcium, and only after the skin is tanned is the white Calcium carbonate visible. The area is on the dorsal (upper) surface just ahead of the tail.

    Right you are. Seems nowadays it's most always left on any stingray-leather items, including things like wallets, both as a "beauty mark" and a sign of authenticity.
