That does look like a nice way of storing sporrans. Depending on the gauge of wire you used and the weight of your sprorran, the hanger may bend down with time. I am content with storing my sporrans in their boxes for now, but that hanger idea may be usefully if I start wearing my kilt for more than formal events (St. Andrew day,Tartan day, Burns Dinners, etc.).

I'm wondering what type of storage boxes you use, as well. My L&M came with a cardboard box which I would find suitable for storage, but I'm still looking for some sort of flat storage container for my goat hair sporran. I've tried hanging it and laying it flat. The laying flat option is preferable, I believe, for keeping the hair laying properly...when it hangs, it is front heavy and it doesn't hang straight up and down. As far as laying it flat, I have not yet found a way of keeping the hair from getting all scrunched up when it gets moved about...and a way of keeping the dust off it. Please feel free to share pics.

Harold...I think that this goes with your topic at hand...your storage hanger, I think, is a great option for certain types of sporrans. It might be an interesting discussion here about types of storage. If you would prefer, we can take the discussion to a new thread...just say the word. I don't mean to steal your thread.

Before I sold my sporran molach, I would store it laying flat in a long, low-profile box, made of tightly-woven, smooth reeds, which allowed the boxes to 'breathe.' When I used to own L&M sporrans, I too kept them in their original cardboard storage box - it was easy then to do so.

I continue to use the same type of boxes, of which they are made of the same material as the one described above, have lids, and are lined with an off-white coloured linen that actually folds over the edges of the box, approximately 2-3 inches, and can be machine-washed when needed (seldom). They are very functional, durable, and aesthetically pleasing. I love have a well organised closet, that is highly functional and practical, yet also looks good - even if it is only myself, or my wife, who sees it.

Within these boxes, I keep my sporrans, sporran straps, hose, flashes, garter ties, sgian dhubhs, day plaid(s) and Highland headwear. I also store my wife's tartan sashes for her. All of our Highland jewelry (silver brooches, cufflinks, badges, etc) are kept separate in their own velvet-lined storage boxes, naturally.

All of my kilts, jackets, doublets, and waistcoats are hung on wooden hangers and kept in protective and breathable garment bags. I also hang cedar blocks at various parts of my closet to prevent moth damage due to the abundancy of wool.

My dress shirts, country shirts, and formal shirts are all hung on wooden hangers as well, but are not kept in garment bags, as there is no reason to. My neck and bow ties are hung on a simple tie organiser. All of my leather brogues and Highland evening shoes, have cedar shoe-trees inside them, and are lined up next to eachother accordingly, beneath my clothing.

Naturally, I also have space for my Saxon clothing to include various suits, blazers, shirtings, jumpers, flat-caps and baseball caps, etc. I do not have too much in my closet though, as much can indeed be folded and placed in my dresser. I prefer to 'travel light' and keep items that I either require, or are sentimental. I am very strict and rigid when it comes to both my Highland and Saxon wardrobe. I throw items out, sell, or give away, that I do not wear any longer and know that I never will wear again.

I absolutely love organisation and cleanliness. I believe we can be products of our own enviornment, and that a clean and organised home, to include one's own closet, brings a sense of serenity, balance, and peace to one's mind and well-being. Photos shall follow...

I think you may be right about it bending over time. I store a couple of my sporrans on regular coat hangers, with the flap secured over the bottom wire, and they all tend to sag over time. With this sporran hanger only supported on one side, I'm betting that over time it will sag and eventually drop the sporran onto the floor.

It would be pretty simple to fashion a 'closure' wire for this, which simply hooks into the end of the lower arm and then connects it to the top, up by the hook, for additional support. If it were me, I'd also add a round sleeve to the lower arm (kinda like the cardboard sleeves you see on coat hangers) so that the leather doesn't take a 'set' from the thin wire over time. With those modifications, I would think it would be an excellent long-term storage option for sporrans! Especially if you made tiny cloth garment bags that would cover them and protect them from dust, etc.

Great idea, Harold! I may end up making something similar.
