Re: Kilt and necktie in matching tartan?

Not a fan. The only thing I'm willing to match is a tartan waistcoat, or doublet for evening wear.

    Cheers,

Re: Kilt and necktie in matching tartan?

Don't wear a matching tartan tie if you visit Ham. One of the first things I learned on this board was not to match a tartan tie to the kilt.

I have matched a tartan scarf....

Not an issue for me since this is the only matching tie/kilt combo I have!

I think the green vest even sets off the tie/kilt combo more. Or they set off the vest. Something like that.

Re: Kilt and necktie in matching tartan?

The thing about wearing tartan neckties with a tartan kilt is that even if they're the same tartan, the sett size is usually different (as ties will generally use a smaller sett so you can actually see the repeat). This makes it look strange to me, as if they go together, but only by accident.

A perfect example of what makes many a Scot cringe. The damage that TV and music hall Scots "personalities" have done to the Scots image will haunt Scotland for many years still to come.

It has often been repeated (and for good reason) that tartan neck ties are not ideal to wear with the kilt. However, the suggestion that nothing tartan should be worn above the waist when wearing a kilt has no basis, neither historically (as you demonstrated) nor in traditional or modern highland attire.

I'll add this painting of the MacDonald boys for another historical example.

And as for more modern examples, there are all manner of perfectly appropriate tartan accessories meant to be worn with the kilt "above the waist," including waistcoats (vests), fly plaids, pipers' & drummers' plaids, tartan doublets, and so forth.

In fact I can really only think of two accessories "above the waist" which really don't work well in tartan if one is wearing the kilt -- tie and cap. Make that three if you also include the shirt.

Jock, my friend, after viewing that video, I, too, will be haunted for many years to come! I guess the singing was fine, but I couldn't get past the fact that his mother dresses him so funny! The tie! . . . The hose! . . . Oh, the humanity!

The same could be said for southerners: if a person has a sounther accent in a movie, he's either crooked or stupid. Kind of the way men seem to be pressented in almost all modern TV programs.

Oh, well. let's just watch that tartan tie thing!
