Re: New Loom Want to Weave
Hi Everyone and thanks for the encouraging responses. My loom was listed as a children's toy, but I thought it would be fun to try, so my kind husband got it for me for Christmas. It has 24 pegs at top and bottom to tie the warp to. I realize that the Wallace plaid would require 36, so I can't follow the pattern exactly. I thought I would decrease the 16 set to 10. I realize that won't be authentic, but this is just a learning experiment for me. BrewerPaul, I didn't understand what it takes to make a diagonal pattern. I'm a little lost there. Could you say in really simple terms? Would appreciate.

Re: New Loom Want to Weave
Welcome from Chciago.
I started looking into weaving a whileback...it's actually pretty fascinating. There are a couple of videos of tartan being woven, notably at Dalgliesh.

Might be some insight there...

Re: New Loom Want to Weave
To weave the diagonal pattern you need to follow this weaving pattern where the weft passes Over and Under the warp.

Where in California? (I'm a Cal native myself). I was going to say something smart (well, smart-***) about warps and woofs but you have already gotten some good advice. Glad to have you with us.

Re: New Loom Want to Weave
Welcome from Atlanta.
Also, remember that the thread count you provided for the Wallace tartan must be REVERSED as well, before it is repeated, otherwise what you get will look nothing like Wallace tartan.
Example:
You're working with Wallace. The thread count would be described as K2 R16 K16 Y2.
If you set your warp up like this:
K2 R16 K16 Y2 K2 R16 K16 Y2 K2 R16 K16 Y2
...it won't come right. You have to reverse it about the pivot points (the colors on each end, which will be in bold, below) also, before you repeat. Like this:
K2 R16 K16 Y2 K16 R16 K2 R16 K16 Y2 K16 R16 K2...
See what I mean?
