Re: New Loom Want to Weave
Hi again,
It's been really great to meet all of you and to read your helpful comments.
After a couple of trials and errors, I think I'm making progress. The comment
about reversing the warp was very helpful. Also, thanks for the OOUU
directions. What seems to be working for me is to use a double thread for the
weave (using a tapestry needle instead of a shuttle) and pick up every other
thread of the warp. Maybe it would produce the same result to go OOUU using a single thread instead of a double, I'll try that also.
It will probably take me a few days to produce something. Then I'll try to learn how to upload a picture of it.

A warm Scottish welcome from middle England.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

Re: New Loom Want to Weave
The really easy patterns would be the x=y ones.
Green and black in a pattern that looks just like USA gingham is in the tartan registry as Robin Hood. Red and White in a "pattern that looks just like USA gingham" is in the tartan registry as MacMedic.
Red and Black in equal amounts would be either Clan MacGregor or Rob Roy depending on who you ask or what you made it for.
Welcome, from Fairbanks, AK.

Re: New Loom Want to Weave
Hi again,
I'm still on the learning curve here, but making progress. I found that using the OOUU
patterns that Ian most graciously sent has produced a diagonal pattern. However, the
warp doesn't show through to make a plaid unless I double the weave and use 2 strands
instead of 1. I'm still learning the vocabulary of weaving. I think that the 4 different patterns that Ian sent must be what Brewer, Paul is referring to as "shafts". This is very
fun and I do appreciate all of the help. I think I'm getting close to actually producing
something! Also, thanks to Ryan for the comment about reversing the warp.

Re: New Loom Want to Weave
Hi again, Lads and Lassies (always wanted to say that). I have posted an album entitled "In Search of the Wallace Plaid, a journey" and have marked it public. I assume you can view it? I've posted several pictures of my quilting projects (pre-weaving), my first weaving, my failed attempts, and finally, the most successful so far weaving that is "reminiscent" of the Wallace plaid. It isn't exactly right due to the limitation of having 24 pegs instead of 36 and of using yarn that I think may be too thick and not exactly the right shade of red. But to my inexperienced eye, it looks something like the Wallace plaid. What think?
