Re: Salt tanning?
Salt tanning will leave your pelt stiff to say the least and it would take you an eon to get it soft. I'd go with the brain tanning or the chemical equivalent and some elbow grease.

To my knowledge, outside of brain tanning, most methods can (or even should) start with salt curing; again, I don't know that I've ever heard the term "salt tanning" used.

Re: Salt tanning?
curing a hide with salt will keep the hair from slipping but is not needed if you want make it into leather
don't salt cure a hide you want it brain tanned
A dried salt cured hair will work as a rug or wall hanging but not so good as a hair on robe

Re: Salt tanning?
Thanks for the advice guys.
I thought it sounded a bit too easy. I'll look at chemical tanning as I'm not sure what the wife might say to the brain tanning...

Re: Salt tanning?
Salted skins will forever draw moisture out of the air and will never result in a usable item. It will be nasty.
Go to vanDykes or Mackenzie and get a Lutan-F kit, follow the instructions, and you will have a great result.

Isn't it essentially just hair-on deer jerkey, after only the salting?

Are those American shops? They don't sound familiar...
