Re: Stillwater shadow tartan
I Just picked up my first HW kilt from Stillwater today, and I got the Saffron Shadow tartan. I keep hearing folks on here say how soft theres are, but I can't agree! My kilt feels like HEMP! Am I special and that's how this is, or is there anything I can do to remedy this situation? This has to be the most stiff, coarse fabric of all the SWK I have owned.

Black Isle only comes in one colorway, but the shadow tartans come in at least a handful of colors.
Sorry for the thread jack.
Is it possible that you were thinking of Stillwaters acrylic tartan (Nightstalker, I believe it was called) That was a distinctive black/dark grey weave.

No, Grant. OC Richard and Fluter had both mentioned kilts on ebay, OCR a "black on black" tartan and Fluter specifically mentioning Black Isle tartan kilts. I just wanted folks to know that Black Shadow tartan and Black Isle tartan are entirely different tartans, although similar in appearence from a few feet away, and both available from Marton Mills in heavyweight wool. Black Isle is actually a district tartan for the peninsular area north of Inverness that is famous for its barley crop and known as, well, Black Isle, even though it is technically not an island. Black Shadow is a fashion tartan made of all black threads of varying texture, as Emmett corrected me above.
I am not particularly familiar with Stillwater's kilts having only visited the site a couple times and never ordered, worn, or to the best of my knowledge even personally seen a Stillwater kilt of any type or tartan.

Re: Stillwater shadow tartan
Nope. I surely have a HW wool Saffron Shadow Tartan kilt from SWK right here in front of me. I posted about it under SWK's section in the forum here, but I figured I chime in here as well. love the kilt and construction and customer service; but this thing for sure is not acrylic.
