I was watching "The Love Boat" last week and as the ship would embark on its voyage of adventure and romance the passengers would stand at the rails and throw streamers and confetti at the poor saps standing on the boarding platform. Is this still done? Was it ever done? It seems like it would make a lot of mess for somebody to have to clean up.

I'm sure there is some precedent for that, but I think these days the passengers are usually in the ship's theaters getting the safety briefing as the ship departs. The first time I went on a cruise, I went from the briefing to finding our cabin, then went for lunch. I realized I'd been there for half a day without going 'outside'.
