Kilt Maker In Bangkok?
Hi Guys,
I'm heading over to Thailand for 6 weeks, and have read about how cheap and well made you could get a suit made. This got me wondering if I could get a kilt made there as well. So does anyone have any advice or experience as to getting a kilt made in Bangkok Thailand.
I have a traditional kilt now and was looking at getting a UK for my next purchase but if I could get another Tartan, Mmmm....
Thanks for replies and would like to say Happy Robbie Burns Day to all...

Re: Kilt Maker In Bangkok?
I have had clothes made in Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. They are great copiers. The best results I have seen are when you take a piece of clothing with you and ask them to copy it exactly, they will. Otherwise take detailed photos of what you want and sit down with them and explain it all in detail, then check that they understand. If what they produce is not right, most will alter it so that you are happy. Any tailor you go into in these countries will say they can do the job. Many will have comment books that they like to keep. Check it all out carefully, then take the plunge that you feel comfortable with. I have also found that when they take your measurements, they put it on a file and you can order in the future via email.
Good Luck with your venture

I may have my countries mixed up...but I believe it was Thailand where there was a company making hemp kilts a few years ago. They took orders and money but either didn't deliver or took a very long time to deliver...cautious.
There's a St. Andrews Society in Bangkok - you may want to contact them for a reliable kiltmaker recommendation.

Google coughed up this tidbit. (editied to stay on topic)
"Raja's Fashions in Bangkok is Tops!

Over the years I've done business with Raja's Fashions in Bangkok numerous times. My wife and I have both had a few suits, sports coats and many dozens of dress and casual shirts and blouses made there. Not only has the fit always been perfect and the workmanship superb, but everything has lasted through several years of use, even though subjected to heavy, worldwide travel.
Bobby Gulati, son of Raja, has always done our measurements and fittings, and provided unerringly superb customer service. I would recommend Bobby and Raja's to anyone without reservation.
And, as a bonus, the little shop is a real "happening place."
On any given day (evening) you'll rub shoulders with ambassadors, embassy employees, diplomatic couriers, DEA agents, a stray general or two, expats from a few dozen countries, corporate executives, consultants (like Selina and me) and any number of assorted interesting characters. It's a great place to polish up your language skills.
Ever see a 6'5" black guy (US Embassy courier) being fitted for a kilt and matching coat, for the biggest expat social event of the year in Bangkok, the St. Andrews Ball? Only at Raja's!
Raja's always delivers great value, great fit, great fabrics, plus free drinks and peanuts while you wait. Just be sure to observe the "no smoking" policy there, Bobby won't stand for having their valuable fabrics contaminated with smoke.
Just one more way that Raja's ensures a top quality product, every time.
Don't be fooled by any other shops calling themselves Raja's (in an effort to confuse potential customers). This is the REAL Raja's.
When in Bangkok, you just gotta get to Raja's!"
The address of this Raja's is 1/6 Soi 4, Th Sukhumvit
And, hey....a website too http://www.rajasfashions.com/

Ron, I think you're thinking of "hilt" (hemp + kilt = Hilt) and if memory serves, they were in Brazil.

I think I'd have remembered Brazil...pretty sure they were in the Far East - and Thailand...
Did some searching here and the threads from 2004 have Adam Florence, the guy selling the hemp kilts "hilts" is in Thailand...or was. The website is still up but pretty basic.
Think some folks lost money on undelivered kilts. No need to make that risk with RKilts offering them now.

Well in 1966 I knew this real nice bar. It wasn't really that nice but they played American music and served American beer. Or Thai beer or Vietnamese bier 33.
Oh the days of my golden youth.
Be careful over there and enjoy.

Re: Kilt Maker In Bangkok?
I really cant imagine there is any tailor shop in Thailand that has experience with tartan or kilts as there must be practically no demand. If you were to take your own tartan, kilt and instructions then I'm sure you will find a tailor that can copy your kilt. But would I risk it?
If you wanted a kilt made out of suit type material or thicker then I'm sure they will be willing to accommodate you but its a humid country where there is little demand for thicker cloths.
Of course I could be completely wrong but I didnt see anything like that when I've been in Bangkok.
