Another kilt hose question with garter ties and bonnet question
Okay, I have ordered my kilt. It shall be an 8yd pv in MacLeod of Harris kingussie pleated to the green with the red stripe showing on the center pleat and flashing on every other pleat. My goal is to eventually wear the kilt daily as a work uniform, I will just have to buy more kilts . As a army vet I tend toward the military/professional uniform look in my work wear. As such I will not be dressing to the smart daywear level much less the "business formal". I am a professional trapper specializing in removal of wildlife from structures and properties. This entails ladders to access roofs and attics as well as low crawling in basements and crawl spaces. I am prepared for that as I will not be regimental and will wear appropriate undergarments so that I can shed the kilt and don a jumpsuit as needed.
For the rest of the uniform I have settled on a khaki, preferably dark or british, shirt in a military style but past that point I hit a wall on hose and bonnet. I want to pick up the red as that is the "livery color" of my business but I also wish to retain the muted colors of Tue khaki uniform look. So far I am considering a fawn bonnet w/dicing and next comes choice of hose and garters. Should the dicing pick up the color of the hose? Also being daily wear multiple pair of hose will be needed so economy is a consideration.
So far I have found military khaki hose at WPG for a good price. I also have found other fair priced hose in other places but it looks like lovat green or blue are the choices there. I also find darker greens, navy and red but in wonder if that much dark (kilt and hose) would be to much to low and in the case of the red be to bright.
What say the rabble? If I choose the khaki or lovats would red garter ties be just right? And should the dicing pick up the hose or tie color?
BTW leathers will be brown and footwear brogues boots, florsheim gaffney to be exact.

That's not necessary.

I do it all the time.

Again, not necessary. Some time there is a nice coordination possible between the garters and the neck tie, but that's just a nice benefit. You can also (in my mind at lest) get a nice effect from having the garter ties match a bright overcheck on your tartan. Just don't clash is all.

I'm more concerned about you wallerin' around under somebody's house or in a briar patch and either ruining a kilt in the Georgia clay or snagging it on something.
As to color, it's possible to have a bonnet made to really closely match the color of your hose, with a stripe in it the same color as your garter ties. Send Ryan Ross a PM about it and see what he comes up with.

When given a choice, most people will choose.

I keep q a jumpsuit in the truck for crawlspaces, I don't even go there with my pants. Now briars the other hand are always an issue and a pair of froglegs (knee boots with attached cordura chaps) handle that and most water trapping. I'm more concerned with attics where I'm often on my hands and knees but then again I do have the jumpsuit.

You can never go wrong with red garter ties. Regardless of what the rest of the outfit has in it, red garter ties (or flashes) will always be 'right'. No need to try to colour-coordinate anything with them.

Exactly. I have a nice variety of colours when it comes to traditional garter ties (House of Cheviot) and elastic 'flashes,' (Lochcarron) but almost every time I wear kilt hose, no matter what colour they are, I choose the red garters. It's so weird...almost comical.
Don't worry about matching so much. As far as hose colour are concerned, go with any colour except for black and white, and you could pair them with virtually any colour of garter or flash - red always being a reliable standard.
Cheers,

I do the same. Every once in a while I'll wear my charcoal grey garter ties, or think about ordering garter ties in some other colours. But then I ask myself, "Why? You'll still just end up wearing the red ones, so don't even bother." I used to think that red garter ties was too over-done by kilt-wearers, and indeed I would hate to see everybody wearing the same colour. But I have come to appreciate the accent one gets from that bit of colour in that particular location. Especially for those of us who have tartans with just a tiny bit of red (like his MacLeod tartan), though it's certainly not a requirement.

Agreed! though I did recently buy a pair of House of Cheviot saffron and dusty pink traditional garter ties from Timothy at House of Labhran. They were on sale at only 3 quid each - I couldn't pass up the deal, and the colours are quite nice!

Cheers,
To the above (in particular, what I've put in bold), I would add "unless your goal is to look evil, at which point black is OK and white is still a bad idea". :cthulhusmiley:
