supply source for miltary kilt refurbishing?
Does anyone know of a source for buying the kind of green woolen twill tape/ribbon that is used as a top band on old military kilts?
Also, are 2 pronged buckles still being produced? Would straps to fit them have to be custom made?

I've no idea on the buckles or twill tape. But the straps should be easy enough for any leatherworker to make. And shouldn't cost very much, either. Heck, I probably have enough scrap laying around to make enough for dozens of kilts worth of straps. Come to think of it, that's a pretty good use for leather scraps.

Try 'Bugpiper' on ebay. He's a former regimental P/M and is located in Scotland. He sells a good number of MOD kilts with the specifications you have mentioned - along with high-quality, MOD issue (most) kit accessories, and he is entirely legitmate. He may be able to source out what you require.
Best of luck,

Bonnie,
I did some google searching for twill tape and wonder if something from this company might not fit the bill.

You may want to contact Robert MacDonald in Vancouver.

He specializes in military kilts.

Thanks so much for your help.
I checked Bugpiper on EBay and he has a lot of great things, but I didn't see any woollen twill tape listed.
Ken, I was also thinking of contacting Robert MacDonald. I was very impressed by his work and his background.
Matt, I found this site that has worsted wool twill tape:

Thanks for sharing the site you found.
A couple of questions:
Is green the color that is always/usually used as the binding/top band for military kilts?
Is black or navy or forest green ever used?
I'm guessing that 1 1/2" wide would be the best, as compared with 7/8" or less. Yes?
Does the twill have to be wool or is cotton okay?
A few years ago, I used green grosgrain ribbon because I couldn't find a source for green wool twill tape. I know it's not proper or correct, but it worked.

I seem to recall seeing officers kilts having a regular tartan band, which wouldnt be a surprise if they had to buy their own... Conversely other ranks kilts likely get recycled altered and repaired... The tape probably makes/made repairs easier...
Wasnt there someone who popped up on here saying they were a military tailor last year?
I dont think that green is the only colour now...

Robert MacDonald spent a good many hours refurbishing all the regimental kilts for the Seaforth Highlanders. Yup, he knows what it is all about.
