Re: All black: a safe choice?
I would agree all black is a safe bet, there is nothing wrong with it and it can look wonderful. If it were me I might pick up on the other colours in the tartan, however the is nothing wrong with the all black look. I've done it myself from time to time

Please forgive sporran placement on this one I had just picked up the kilt and was excited to get the photos taken.

I've gone all black on many occasions to good effect I think.
And the girls seem to like it as well.

It'll definitely work -- go for it!
I also agree about "picking up some other colors". For instance, on Saturday I went with my lass to a play. I decided to go not with all black but with "repetitions of black elements". I wore a sort of slatey-blue buttondown silk-cotton blend shirt, and Lewis hose in Ancient Blue. But the kilt was in Douglas Grey (purely grey & black); black kilt belt w/silver-colored buckle; black leather sporran & sporran strap; black leather bomber jacket; charcoal garter ties; and black wingtip brogues. Definitely worked for attending a afternoon performance at The Theatah.

Just a question...and I toss it to these who have worn them because I haven't...is it a good idea to wear ghillie brogues and go dancing the first time you're wearing them out? Just thinking of some dress shoes that I have worn for the first time that were killing me by the time the evening was over.

I'll be the wrench in the works and say I'm not a big fan of all-black, especially at a ceilidh. If I were a guest at said party, I'd wonder why you were wearing all black, and I might be smart-aleck enough to ask why you were disguised as a rotten banana, if I knew you well enough. At a party, I'd rather see you wearing at least some white to break up the black.
Now, as usual around here, you have both sides of the question. What really matters is how many pictures you post for us to look over.

I doubt it, but luckily there is no six week wait for the ghillie brogues, so I'll be able to wear them to a couple of dance classes and around the house before the ceilidh.

If I would have more time between getting the kilt and wearing it, I would do so too, it was specifically the lack thereof that caused me to ask this question.
Thank you all, your reactions set my fashion sense lacking mind at ease!

The cool thing is that as time goes by you can add to your kilt hose. I've been wearing a kilt regularly for about 5 years and I think I must have about 50 pair of kilt hose. As I said black is fine and it will look great, have a good time at the ceilidh that is the most important thing.
