If I were going to go "modern" I'd mix metaphors, so to speak, and pair up my kilt with a jacket like this, though I'd opt for a regular bow tie and no hat.

For long hair a braid (almost like a low French braid starting about level with your ears - not a true French braid) with the last 2-3 inches wrapped in black satin ribbon and tied off in a knot is very elegant.
