Are you wearing a kilt?

I've worn a kilt to class many times in the past. I have always have positive comments and reactions. Last week was the first time I wore the kilt this Spring term. I am accustomed to the usual questions like, "Where did you get your kilt?" and "Do you play bagpipes?" But there was one question that threw me off guard on this day.

"Are you wearing a kilt?"

The obvious answer was "yes", but I couldn't discern if it was incredulity or an actual question. Nevertheless, I did my best to answer politely and explain that I simply love wearing the kilt. "Wow, that is so cool", came their reply. "I've never seen anyone wear one just because they wanted to."

One of my classmates told me that he too owns a Blackwatch kilt and he thought mine was awesome. (I was wearing Isle of Skye) I told him about XMarks. He said he'd check it out. Later, as I was walking to my car I overheard some 20-somethings talking nearby and I heard one say, "See, I'm Scottish so I totally respect that guy for wearing a kilt."

It was another great day of kilting. I think I'll go kilted a bit more this term.

Was it a tartan or solid-color kilt? I wore my Utilikilt to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta one year, visited the Virgin Galactic booth, and was asked if I was wearing a kilt, and if so, what nationality was I. (I'm Filipino.) So, I explained my love of kilts. I think she was going to ask more questions, but other booth visitors vied for attention.

Good on you wearing the kilt to class in Illinois (no elaboration needed). Interesting the young lady did not say, "Highland Scots," as opposed to "Scottish."

That is what i dont understand about people in this country, A women dosent need a "excuse" to wear pants, shorts, skirts, and dresses.. But A guy needs a excuse for everything...Like... Whats the occasion? Are you going to a wedding? a funeral? to a "party"? ...etc..... WHY??????

I don't think it's anything to do with your country. If someone here was wearing a kilt outside a wedding, formal event, football match etc they might be asked why they were doing so. Just because it's out of the ordinary.
I would see it as a person just being curious, rather than taking it as an insult from them.

Well, this sporan would look pretty funny if I were wearing jeans!

I went out & about (kilted as usually), yesterday & today.

Most of the day was fairly normal. I honestly thought coffee & chat with Steve @ Freedom Kilts would be my high point of my day, followed by a visit to Guitars Plus. After that, the Lass thought it would be nice to check out Tilleys. The people who were very upbeat about a kilted genleman being in their store. Since they didnt have the tweed fedora I was looking for tthey directed me to the new Tilley store in Victoria. The manager greeted me like a long lost cousin & commented about me being kilted & asked if I always did that. My standard answer is Yes. I tried out the tweed style fedora, but it didnt fit. While he looked for different styles/colors. As he did he offered coffee, tea & snacks. After I got my java & looking for him to return I thought I would chck out the adventure pants. Ha returned with some hats that might fit my pinheadas he did he said "HEY ... Why are you lookin at pants?". BUSTED He had2 hats that 2 wool hats that looked very nice. One was dark grey cheeked tweed fedoru style, the other was a dark brown tweed Ivy. Everyone involved agreed that the Ivy looked very nice & much more dapper. The manager commented, "Im not sure if you can mix Irish & Scottish, but it looks nice.".
Today the fun started in the drivaway. I was standin the I hear, "A kilt! Alright. Going anywhere special?" from a luvly lady up the street. The response was, "Just out n bout.". Not longer did the lady go I hear, "Whats the occasion?", from the Lasses neighbor. My stadard answer to that question is, "Sunday.'. As it turns out hes a fellow kilty, & gave me to a heads up on a MacLean kilt at Value Village. As i walked the islies at VV Boutque I hear a lady stay, "A kilt ... I like it!" At the next islie a lady says, "Very nice looking.". As I drink my coke & wait for my burger at Mr.Tube Steak, an older scottish gentleman walks up & says, "Oy, yer dressed a lil different lad.". We chat for a bit & as he left he threw my a, "Up yer kilt laddie!". A few minutes later a lady walked up & inquired if I was scottish. Ensured that Scottish blood ran through my viens, she commented home much she loved kilted men.

this has been a busy weekend with a lot of running around, and i have been getting more comfortable with wearing a kilt in general rather than to nice dinner, etc. at the grocery store, two different guys stopped me wanting to know if there was a parade. when i told them that i just liked wearing a kilt because it was comfortable, both said it must be and gave me good marks. at a working lunch yesterday, i got stares from drones in shorts, t shirts and hats, but only the waitresses voiced anything--which were all positive. tonight at a pizza place--same--staring patrons and interested waitresses. i will take the waitresses' opinions.
