As a minister I conducted over a hundred funerals in the USA, in a conservative Presbyterian denomination, and I can't recall ever having seen a single black tie. People dressed soberly but not in black. This is not an apodictic comment but simply an observation.

I agree, muted colors are more appropriate for a funeral. I attended my sisters funeral in a plain black kilt, white shirt and black vest. I attend funerals of friends and associates wearing muted colors.

Funerals I have conducted have had a dizzying array of inappropriate and even disgusting dress. I have tried to ignore it since that's not what a funeral is about, but rather commending the deceased to the care of God.
Dress to be not noticed. It's not about you. It's about the deceased, the family and God.

That is my observation as well. Black ties are not the norm in the USA. Conservative, yes. Black, no.

I notice that issue at damn near every funeral and wedding I've ever attended. I'm pretty sure the folks who show up at these sort of important events with ragged jeans, shirt-tails out, crocs, bare midrifts, etc... didn't ask anyone's permission either.

Father Bill, how do I do this wearing a kilt, I live in a small midwest town, not many kilts. ( I am the only one that has one ) She enjoyed me coming to visit in my kilt, ( she asked if I would ) so are you saying I should dress like everyone else and not wear my kilt in her honor? I am sure I will be the only one kilted, so yes I will be noticed.
