Thank you for that. Er, um, how do I say this? I know that river pretty well and indeed there are lots and lots of very large(many feet across sometimes) boulders strewn about, even several large boulders together that might just be seen as an island, but as for a genuine island, well I hope "they" build you one before you arrive! Sorry.

after seeing this topic pop up a few times and now having done some additional reading, the idea of this being in effect a charitable donation has appeal--so, does anyone know which or if any sellers actually support improvement/upkeep of these lands rather than sellers who just pocket the money?
fun + charity = worthwhile to me.
fun - rip off = complete waste of money.
or should i go back to my original idea of buying a bit of Laphroaig (which also pops up whenever i buy a bottle) --that is an institution i know i believe in!

You mean the photos they sent me are fake?
Like I said, I don't take it too seriously. It was a novelty birthday gift from my wife.

i do not care about fake photos, nifty looking "deeds"--fine, those are literally worth the paper they are printed on, as are the "rights" one "acquires." i want to know whether any of the sellers actually use the money to maintain or improve the estates from which they derive, as some have alluded to here. i do not mind supporting what in effect would be conservation--for example, i am in ducks unlimited, even though i shoot skeet, not ducks. i am in the rails to trails conservancy to support biking trails nationwide, though i almost exclusively ride locally.

Jock, the easiest way to see the area I'm talking about would be to go to www.myglengarry.com On their homepage is an aerial photo of the area. Follow it to the west a little ways and you'll see the little island I mentioned. It looks like there's a footbridge across the river at that point also.
opositive, most of the places that are selling these 'titles' to land say that the money is going to conservation efforts. For instance, the myglengarry site says that this land has been put into a trust and that "...the Trust manages all the land on the owners' behalf, undertaking projects that include work within the native Highland woodlands, the river and its banks, pathways and walks through the area and provides funds to help maintain the ancient Invergarry Castle." Whether they're actually doing that or not, who knows?

I know the foot bridge well. You park by Invergarry Post Office(it must be the smallest in the UK?) take a short walk to the bridge and there you are! Your, er, island? There are lovely walks along both sides of the river from almost top to bottom. Of interest just upstream of the dam on the right hand side is a rediscovered clearance village------long forgotten when trees were planted and only seen again when the trees were cut down a few years ago. I know there are all to many of these villages in the Highlands, but this one has been hidden away for the best part of 100 years. I am told that trees will not be replanted over the village and will be left for all to see. Makes me wonder how many more are lurking in those 100's of thousands of acres of trees that we have now.

On our trip to Scotland we went from Loch Shiel and Loch Moidart up the A82 to Inverness. There's some beautiful country in there.

http://www.myglengarry.com/about_us.htm Appreciate this is a follow on link from the post by SeumasA above, but this page just about sums it up for you. Most of these title deed enterprises are in a similar vein and for similar conservation reasons (as I understand it). Managing estates is apparently an expensive business and I can well imagine it would be.

Well, Alex, hope this won't dash plans for our retirement home on Islay.
