Well, unfortunately I did not win the most recent Ebay auction our own Shaun Maxwell had informed me about. I did place many bids, but another chap got me in the end. The lovely sporran went for around $140 - not including shipping costs from Scotland. There's always next time I suppose! Alas, my search continues.

Meantime, I await a newly commissioned, Kate Macpherson animal, full-mask sporran made of mink - that's something to look forward to!

Thanks for your kind gesture, Shaun!

    Cheers,

$140 is not a bad price, considering what I've seen them go for lately.

I'm still trying to clean up my cantle. Lots of elbow grease and patience is required, especially on the black spots. One thing I've noticed, too, is that the quality control was pretty poor when they made this. The top button is slightly off-center, and the decorative designs on the front are not quite centered either (even in relation to each other). The shape of the cantle is slightly distorted, due to the softness of the brass and possibly being stored under a lot of weight. So I'm very carefully trying to bend it back into shape. It'll never be perfect, but I'll just say it has "character".

Well, as much as I admire all you guys with your ketchup, vinegar, elbow grease and whatnot, my cantle had some very minor repairs needed so I let the trumpet repair guy at the local music shop shine mine while he had it.

Wow!!! Very nice, Kenneth! That looks great! What a fantastic idea, having a fellow that deals with brass instruments day in and day out, assist you with your brass cantle. Makes perfect sense!

    Cheers,

In all fairness, it was at Harold's suggestion; he seems to know all the right folks to deal with. (Thanks, Harold!)

LOL! Well maybe not all the right folks! I'm glad it turned out nicely for you. I can't wait to see it with a new bag.

Wow - he did a fantastic job of making it shine! That's a pretty darn good idea, sending it to an instrument repair shop that deals with brass instruments. Much smarter than what I was about to resort to, anyway, which was putting mine in a big brass tumbler that I use for cleaning my reloading brass.
