    Normal?

I ordered a sporran on tuesday and it came in the mail today and I gotta say that yes it matches the description; however, the quality is less than that that I would have liked for my first sporran. Do they normally have liners? Confused am I!

Ya gotta be careful in the accessories dept too.

Great search engine here for most vendors - if a problem you may find warnings.

Remember, you can have any two of price, service, or quality.

Mine doesn't have a liner, and boy was it cheap. Alas, I think Riverkilt speaks the truth when nhe says you can have any TWO of those three things, but not all three!
I was disappointed in my cheapo day sporran, but I've begun to mod it to my own purposes - for instance, removing the annoying-beyond-reason popper fastening, which had me poking madly at my own crotch while vainly trying to make it fasten (never a good look); I'm replacing it with a swing fastener or possibly a ring and pin closure, depending on which I find first. I've removed the tassels for the moment, because I'm not sure I can live with the constant pitter-pattering noise as I walk along.
And so it goes... enjoy making your sporran YOUR sporran!

On the subject of sporrans, I highly recomment Buzz Kidder. USA Kilts and Stillwater Kilts both sell them (others probably do as well, but that's where I go). They both support the forum, and both provide excellent service, quick responses to questions, and fast shipping. I mean Wile E Coyote ordering from Acme fast!

The sporrans themselves are pretty well made, but are not lined. They are good looking, in an understated way, and are roomy as heck. They're the best thing, IMO, that you'll find in the $55-$65 range or even a bit higher than that. At that price, they're perfect for everyday use, but look good enough that you can get away with wearing one when dressed up a bit. I don't mean formal--maybe suit equivalent for company events and such.

For fasteners, I like the magnetic catches (which BK's have). They hold well and open easily, and when you close it you won't look like you're doing something...odd.

OK, once again I have learned something new here, some sporrans have liners.
I have never seen this and I have been wearing sporrans a long time. I currently have 5, (or is that 6?) and a great many have bitten the dust before, all made in Scotland.
I have worn coo leather, pigskin, sealskin, goathair, alleged ponyskin, and long horsehair sporrans over a period of over 30 years. However, I have not ever seen a lined sporran.

I've never seen one "in the flesh" but have noted a few online, and in a surprisingly wide range of prices. I honestly don't know why they line them. If it's made of decent leather it will last quite a while...much longer than the liner anyhow. Seems pointless to me, and just something else to wear out, but if someone prefers it for some reason I won't argue the point.

I think that you nailed it with 'if it is made of decent leather' as to why some sporans are lined.

Now when I made a purse out of rat skin I had to make a purse from two layers of sturdy cotton and then attach the skin to that, otherwise the coins would have split the skin in no time. I have seen items in charity shops where the back of the leather is only held together by the plastic layer on the outside, so presumably there is an ongoing source of leather which is not tanned correctly but so cheap that no one really cares.

It might be that someone is using some slightly cheaper but good quality leather with flaws or stains on the inside and has patched it, or is trying to make it look better, of course, but just call me suspicious as that was not the first thing that came to mind.
