Trying something out (headwear)
So, before I drop a significant amount of coin on a caubeen, tam or balmoral, I stopped by a local army/navy store and purchased a beret. It was pretty close to the color of my tartan, so I thought it looked ok. I do like to wear hats (in general), but haven't really worn them with the kilt. I don't know that I'd wear it that often (so the current $14.00 price tag is quite pleasant).
Thoughts from the rabble.
P.S. The jacket is the third that I've had converted. I'll talk about it in another post.

Once it has gone through the shaping process, it should be fine. I like it.

I think it looks fine. I really like that jacket conversion!
But the beret looks good and goes well with the outfit. Although, I am sure someone will chime in to discuss the significance of color and "entitlement". I hope I am wrong about that. To be honest, I don't wear hats with my kilt much because I don't care for the traditional headwear. I like this because it is similar and I might give this a shot--probably I'd go a bit more casual with it (just for me).

Seriously, I think it looks great. Super conversion job too!!

Despite the similarities between a balmoral and a beret, the two are not the same. If you like wearing a maroon beret with your kilt, that's fine, but if you want a balmoral bonnet I encourage you to get a balmoral bonnet.
If you do like wearing the beret and stick with that, be prepared to have people ask if you used to jump out of planes...

I do like the look. I agree that when it gets broken in some, it will be even better looking. Again, well done.

All I will say, from a Scots perspective your beret is not of a colour often seen(never in my experience) with the civilian kilt in Scotland. So you may wish to consider this point before spending your hard earned loot on a balmoral of like colour.

All... if I decided to get a balmoral or caubeen, I'd go with a black or dark green. I just thought this one would be "fun" for about 14 usd. Regardless, I doubt I will wear it much, so this might be the more frugal route.
Thanks for the replies!

I have a couple of those, I don't think they could be mistaken for balmorals in my case. Now you have me wondering if the flash and dui would look good on a balmoral.
That doesn't look bad though, my recommendation is to sew a toorie and cockade on that thing. With those distinctions you might even pass muster if you drove south a ways to Bragg.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some berets to dig out of a footlocker.
