I'll lift a pint to "The Big Stick" Saturday evening while wearing my Iowa tartan kilt. int:
@sailortats: do you have the source for that photo? I'd love to post that on facebook.

...correctly stated, this is likely the last time in the history of the world, one will ever see a battleship moving, with blue water beneath her keel.
Unless some in the USMC and Congress have their way. They've been worried about the loss of shore bombardment options since the Iowa-class were taken out of service. With missile interdiction technology advancing and becoming more affordable, big guns may be making a come-back soon. Not trying to start a debate about it, just relaying some info which may make that a false statement.
Now, I want to know what ship will take her name and carry the legacy onward. Likely, it's going to be a Virginia-class fast attack sub or a SSBN-X (my preference).

cajunscot - I took that photo from the ship's website; http://www.pacificbattleship.com/
I just checked the site and cannot find that picture there now. Sorry but I do not know who to credit the photo to.
deirachel - there was a rumor going around when I worked on her in Richmond that pretty much said what you said above. There just may be battleships again in the future.
A more beautiful ship never sailed the 7 seas, except, of course, my ship, USS Hissem DER400

I think it's crazy not to keep the battleship weapon system part of our naval inventory. You can't interdict 16 inch shells from a battlewagon's rifles, and with the ability to lob them 30 miles inland! - I hope we see them recommissioned in the not-too-distant future....

That's good enough; many thanks!
My great-uncle, an Iowa native, Scottish-American and a 30-year Navy man (retired HMC) would very proud of "The Big Stick!"

Fantastic pic! I live locally and this is the first pic I have seen of a piper, and there were tons of media coverage what a shame. If any of the rabble do visit the Iowa I am about 15 minutes away and always welcome to meeting up fellow kilties. I believe, because the schedule coming to LA was delayed, she is supposed to open 7 July as a museum until then she is being worked on. Interesting story in the LA Times indicated until 2020 she could be recalled to active duty.
