Thanks for posting a most interesting article, Jock and Deirachel.
I always enjoy reading about what the Queen is really like, as opposed to popular (or not so popular) suppositions.
By the way, Deirachel, Her Majesty’s husband is not “His Highness”. His full style is HRH [that is, His Royal Highness] the Prince Philip, but before the Queen created him a prince of the realm, he was known (from the day of their wedding) as the Duke of Edinburgh. The formal style of address to a duke is “Your Grace”, but as is well known he is not a man to stand on ceremony.
He is of course still Duke of Edinburgh, but being a prince trumps being a duke.
I was also fascinated by the tartans the Queen was shown wearing. The duke was wearing Balmoral, but I am not certain what setts Her Majesty was sporting.
    Regards,
    Mike

Phillip was Prince before he was Duke. He was born His Royal Highness Prince Phillip of Greece and Denmark. He divested himself of this title in March 1947, making him Lieutenant Phillip Mountbatten. On November 19 1947, he was awarded the style of His Royal Highness Sir Phillip Mountbatten by King George VI, then made the His Royal Highness Duke of Edinburgh on Nov 20, 1947. In 1957, he became His Royal Highness The Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh So, actually, he was never His Grace Duke of Edinburgh. The omission was simple oversight.

Deirachel, on at least one point you are mistaken, and it may be that you are also on one or two others.
As you say, the present Duke of Edinburgh was born a prince of Greece, and so had all the appurtenances of royalty from birth.
However, when he resigned his titles on the eve of becoming engaged, he had only his naval rank to fall back on: he was Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, RN.
I know of no knighthood that was conferred on him at the time. Of course he is now a Garter knight and a member of several other orders.
He remained without princely title until the Queen created him a prince of the realm in 1957. (Strange how clear that recollection is: I was only eight years old at the time.) It would not have been necessary for her to do so had her father granted him that status while still alive.
    Regards,
    Mike
