I know it can be tempting to wear a regular sport coat until you can obtain a proper kilt jacket, but every time I have seen someone doing this, I couldn't help but think how much better he would have looked without the jacket. In place of a jacket try wearing a waistcoat, or a pullover sweater, and you'll look ten times better!

In the meantime, keep your eye out on Ebay for a second hand kilt jacket in your size, or start saving your pennies to get a tailor made one for you, and you won't regret it!

I have a few tweed sport coats that I have altered for wear with a kilt. I just studied pictures of kilted men wearing jackets and decided on the length and fit, then I cut up a $4 coat from a thrift store and made myself a nice kilt jacket. Simply use chalk to mark the shape of the sporran cutaway and the length and a tailor can sew it up for you. It's an inexpensive interim alternative to a bespoke jacket.

    Good Luck!

I did try on the whole shebang with the regular sport coat. And I couldn't agree with Mr. Newsome more. It looked aweful! So the search is still on. Thank you guys for all your input!

Even though I'm a rather large size I've had no trouble picking up used Argyll jackets (kilt jackets) in both black and tweed, rather inexpensively, on Ebay.

This discourages me from going through the trouble of coverting an ordinary tweed sport coat. (And, no matter how well a conversion is done, they rarely are correctly shaped in front.)

I recently picked up this jacket in a lovely tweed. It's very high-quality with great detailing and very nice heavy fabric. Cost around $100.

I think that a regular length sport coat looks sloppy with a kilt. Maybe it would look good converted?
