Oddly enough, I have never been asked if I was Irish when kilted. The question I do get most of the time is not "are you Scottish" but "Are you from Scotland?"

John,
That can't possibly be! Texas runs from the west bank of the Mississippi to California, doesn't it? I know when I drive through it, that seems to be the case.

I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

By far the most common question I get when kilted is "are you Irish?"
To which I reply, No I'm an American
Then they ask do you play the Bag pipes
Then I reply, No I play the radio

Alternative response: no, I play the fool. Then do bongos on their stomachs. Then run away fast.

About state shapes, a surprising number are big rectangles, perhaps with a nick in one corner here or there, or a wiggly bit on one side, showing a desire to ignore topography and/or a lack of imagination.

Also... odd that the majority of our State Flags are the same, plain blue rectangles with the State seal etc in the middle... makes you appreciate the ones that have unique designs

Anyhow the common American mixing of Scotland and Ireland has been helped along by the unfortunate term "Scotch-Irish". Once, while I was out playing the pipes, a young girl came up and enthusiastically informed me that her ancestors were from "Scotch-Ireland". (Where else, when you think about it, would the Scotch-Irish hail from?)

Using the older Stars and Bars based-design (one of those lovely things about my state, we get rid of the "racist" "Confederate" flag based off the second official CSA flag and replace it with a design based off the first official Confederate States of America's flag. Wait wut? How is that less racist? Hell, how is the second flag racist?)

I once heard the Utah flag referred to as the state seal on a bed sheet.

i can't comment for all americans but sadly it is true, unless they are into history or heritage , the kilt is lumped in as a "celtic" style piece of clothing.
i also think things like ST.pattricks day parades with all there kilted pipers have put it into the average americans head that it is also an irish thing.
one day at my local Renn.faire in my pride of scotland tartan kilt, a weapons vendor called out how i looked like and irish kern..(face palm)

Yep, we Americans can be pretty ignorant, I get asked if I'm Irish frequently, though I'm usually just wearing jeans and a t-shirt at the time.
