Sorry Kiltedscot, I have been a little too busy recently to re-read all the information I have read on tartans and kilts to find the sources that led me to believe that generally speaking the brighter colors are considered more formal. I especially am not going to go to all that work if you are going to ignore the 99% of my post which states that I agree with you that one can wear either tartan formally or informally and choose to focus on the one sentance that says generally red is considered more formal.
I didn't even say that that is how I feel. I even said that if you don't want to stand out so much from the non-kilt wearing crowd the darker tartan may be more appropriate.

My original statement was about a question on a tartan in hunting and red. Some purists say that you should not show any bright metal in "hunting atire." A lot of bright metal is worn in formal wear. Wearing a hunting tartan with bright metal might be considered a contrast in this sense.
