Of Course I order a Robertson Red Modern. Is this going to be OK or not to wear casual?
And now I have to order a new casual in Hunting Green, Poor me lol (my wife is going to kill me)
Also I'll Break down what I bought for my casual outfit.
1. Kilt Hose
2. Black Gillie Brogues
3. Black Leather Sporran
4. Celtic embosed Leather Belt
5. Clan Crest Belt Buckle (Silver\Pewter)
6. Clan Crest Kilt Pin (Silver\Pewter)
7. Plain Red Flashes
I just browsed through my new book "So You're going to wear the Kilt" and it said that you should not wear silver buckles or kilt pins with day wear, i.e. may give off flashes. Is this correct, should I order a brass belt buckle and kilt pin, and is it ok to wear a clan crest buckle or sporran at all, in day or formal wear?

The red/green rule is a good guideline, but just that. Wear whatever colour you have. Of course it is a good excuse to order another kilt.
I have worn all three kilts out casually (Black Watch, Mackenzie, Royal Stewart). I do prefer to wear the Royal Stewart for more formal events, and the two green for day to day casual wear.

I kinda avoid primarily red tartans. The way I'm built it would look like crap. Make me look like a road construction barrel

Remember, as has been pointed out here and elsewhere, Thompsons book was intended as a starting point for those of us here in the states who didn't grow up with the kilt traditions. I don't think Thompson was as much a purist as some make him out to be either. Don't stress on it, just wear your kilt as much as you can and make it your own. Wear it with confidence and people will assume you know what you're doing, but be at all timid and they'll critique you at every turn.
Now go out and have some fun!

By the way, in one of lifes true ironies, I think the word you meant to use in your header was "faux pas" pronounced foe paw meaning "a slip or blunder in manners or conduct"
Not to offend, I hope I haven't commited a faux pas by pointing this out.

I felt like "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" in the Royal Stewart.
Tigger - Jamie was right, just wear what you like. I figure, either way it's a kilt, and a plain kilt looks better than a nice tux any day.
There is a Robertson Dress tartan if you're really worried about it...but you really shouldn't be.

Tigger if I were you and going to go casual I'd not use the ghille shoes .Keep those for a dress occasion or where smarter casual is called for.
I where mine for church services for example.and sturdy walking shoes or boots otherwise.
Look at the galleries of some of the other members to get some idea.
Don't overdress keep it simple. As Hamish has said it's all a question of balance.

I agree with Freelander. Ghillie brogues are great to have for formal wear but not really for casual. Similarly, you wouldn't want to wear dress shoes with a track suit.
As for a belt... I have a simple pewter buckle with a very dull grey finish that I use for casual. I replace it with a silver clan buckle for fancier ocassions.
You have probably guessed that white kilthose/socks are a no-no. Off-white, grey or some other color would be preferable.
As for the tartan issue... there are dress tartans where one of the primary colors is replaced with white. One of these tartans might be considered out of place.
The rest of the kit sound great.... Enjoy!

Well Thank you all for the advice, I'll probally use my Navy issue Jungle combat boots with some dark colored socks and save my Ghillie's for the formal outfit as suggested by Freelander. And Thank You Bikercelt1 for the Speeling (sorry spellong lol)update, I never have been the greatest speller. But thank You all for the Help I appreciate all of it.
By the Way Bikercelt1 what do you ride, I got a 1991 Harley Fatboy?

Tigger, sounds like you have a great outfit picked out.
There is nothing wrong with wearing the red kilt for casual wear.
The belt buckle and the kilt pin are also ok for casual wear. I believe in the book that J. Charles Thompson even says that some purists say that you should have nothing that could be reflective in your casual wear, but most people find it acceptable.
I also agree with others that ghillie broges are best left for formal attire.
