    Ha!

    My "membership" arrived yesterday!

Here it is after cleaning the cantle.

Good news #1: cantle in perfect condition
Good news #2: bag in decent condition, just needs a cleaning
Bad news: three of the eight snaps don't work

So now I'll shop around for those snaps and see how hard it is to 1) find them and 2) install them.

I'm really looking forward to a DIY project of making an 18th century style bag for that cantle. The several postings by Artificer and others are simultaneously humbling and inspiring.

BTW also in that photo are a lot of shoe buckles I picked up cheaply on Ebay. Everything is laying on my unfinished Auld Scotland kilt.

Richard, if I may ask, what did you use as a search term to find the buckles on Ebay?

Richard, the snaps should be easy to find at any sewing / fabric store. They are made by Dritz and are called "Sew on Snaps"...size 10. They come in chrome and black. Warning for you though...they are larger in diameter (the disc part) than the originals...so I'm not sure that you'll be able to replace the ones on the original bag...but maybe

Thanks so much! Dritz size 10 it is. I'll try to get them today.

They're so cool, those cantles, the way one can make multiple bags and switch them out. I have a big piece of LONG Angora fur...

About the shoe buckles, sometimes I search Ebay "shoe buckles -buckle" and come up with these Scottish ones, and 18th century ones, etc. Or you could search "scottish shoe buckles".

That lot of buckles, 5 in all, cost $40. Three are the typical "#355" buckles, stamped? Anyhow rather thin metal, with the same design on the backside like reposse, silver plated. Two are solid thick cast in a rarer pattern.

Sorry, it's the first thing that came to mind - some are more creative than others.

Pants is only a present tense verb here. I once panted, but it's all cool now.

Richard, another brand of the snap fasteners are as follows The actual product is called Snap Fasteners 18mm size item code 10720 and made by a firm called SULLIVANS and should be available in any large knitting or sewing store. Great find on the sporran and buckles

Well done, Richard! I have the same buckles. Ian Grant of Edinburgh can also make virtually any type of shoe buckle design in either solid sterling silver or silver plate.

    Cheers,
