For a kilt, I would suggest a Wool Black Watch economy from jerry at Stillwater Kilts
    http://stores.channeladvisor.com/Sti...-100%25%20Wool! $87.0 plus S&H

They are 24" length but you can get someone to take it up if it's too long

And for a sporran "What price Glory" and includes the sporran belt for $25.00 plus P&H
    http://onlinemilitaria.com/shopexd.asp?id=1980&bc=no

Okay they are not top of the range but for $112 plus P&H, you get a wool kilt and a very servicable sporran

There was a photo yesterday of members of the Black Watch at Moy in Scotland in very causal attire. I will see if I can find it

    Kilt: check.

    Sporran: check.

You'll need a belt. 2 1/4" or so. You might want to match the sporran...

Beyond that, it's every kiltie for himself. You can range from tshirt and sandals (my summer attire) to full dress, depending on your situation. To start: kilt, belt, sporran.

I think hose should be on the list too.

I started with a kilt. Then added sporran & belt. That worked till for summer. Then I added hose.

    McCowboy ,

Very good advice from Downunder Kilt , I was going to suggest almost the same thing , especially SWK kilt in the economy wool . SWK has the economy kilt in a PV , but they also have a limited supply of the economy kilt in wool in various waist sizes ( not all waist sizes but a decent variety ) . Here is the link
    http://stores.channeladvisor.com/Sti...-100%25%20Wool!

Sorry , it's kind of a long link , but it takes you directly to the kilt ( just click on it ) it's only available in Black Watch tartan but it's a great way to get started in kilting at economical price , as Downunder pointed out .

Also , here is a review of that kilt by another member : http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...-review-73426/

As others have stated , a sporran would be your next item and perhaps a belt , all of which can be purchased at a reasonable price . These can be purchased at SWK or other vendors . There are many great vendors here .

I think we can all appreciate the pocketbook issues , you are not alone on that one !

A belt can make you look very smart but I would not say it was vital to begin with. Personally I never wear one but I would not be seen dead without a sporran.
    Good luck with your purchases.

The first thing you need is a good kilt. I know you are on a budget (who isn't?) but I would recommend you not skimp too much on the kilt itself. If the kilt looks good, you would be amazed at how it really raises the level of the entire outfit, even if you don't have all the nice accessories you might otherwise want.

In terms of accessories, here is the minimum you will want:
    1) a sporran -- doesn't have to be anything fancy, just functional
    2) a narrow leather belt to hang the sporran from -- many sporrans come with one when you purchase them
    3) a decent pair of kilt hose
    4) garters to keep the hose from slipping down

That's it. Unless you are attending a formal function with minimum dress requirements, that should be enough to get you through most casual outings, and you can add any other accessories you might want at a later time, as you need them and can afford them.

I wrote an article with more advice to the beginning kilt wearer called "Getter Started" which you can read here:

Those look pretty good for an entry level kilt, and can be your hiking/mowing the lawn/pub hopping kilt when you can afford a super nice one.

Hot tip from the ladies - don't go for white/cream hose (outs you as a n00b) Get flashes that coordinate with your kilt colors as well, but not matching your hose color. You can get tartan flashes, but solid ones will go with all of your future kilts, saving you a little bit of $$$.

I have to disagree with you here mirthlesstroll. I am not a new-b but I wear white hose fairly often. As far as I am concerned white hose look very sharp, especially in a formal setting. I have never worn anything except white hose when I wear my PC.

McCowboy, I have a PV kilt from USA Kilts and am more than pleased with it. They hang nicely, the pleats do not wrinkle much, if any, and are very comfortable. But then all kilts are very comfortable.
Also I have bought several items from Buyakilt.com and have always been completely satisfied with the product and the service. Don't forget pics when it is all said and done.

I purchased my PV kilt kit from www.buyakilt.com I really enjoy it. Of course now the addiction, purchased a second belt and sporran from SWK. Now new hose from USAkilts. I next found a jacket at a thrift store and had converted to a kilt jacket. .
