The under apron strap is sewn to the outside of the fabric, so I would be stiching through the existing holes.

For what it's worth: there are no alterations to a kilt that require a sewing machine. Anything worth doing is worth doing by hand. My two pennys worth.

Please remember that when you stitch your straps and buckles back on you MUST stitch completely through the outer fabric catching the stabilizer and interfacing as you go.

If you only stitch the straps and buckles to the outer fabric you lose the strength of the kilt and transfer the stress of wearing the kilt to the fabric and pleat stitching.

Your kilt will stretch out of shape and the fabric will be distorted.

If you do not understand the internal elements of your kilt may I suggest that you take a look at a thread from last year where I opened up a kilt to show what is hidden underneath the liner.

Thankyou for the excellent help. I will only need to make a small adjustment about 1 inch so its great to hear that this is an easy and cheap way of keeping a kilt I love.

For sewing leather, a sail makers palm or at least some pliers might be needed. Otherwise, the back end of a needle really hurts when it embeddes itself in your palm.
